Maó

City located at the easternmost part of the Island of Minorca (Balearic Islands). The origins of Maó dates back to prehistory. Its port, located in the middle of the Western Mediterranean, has been a strategic point for centuries. The economy of the city is based on tourism, agriculture and shoe industry. The lat development of tourism has made possible the conservation of the coast of the island. Along this line, Minorca was declared Biosphere Reservoir by UNESCO in 1993. It is not strange then that the northernmost part of the city forms part of the Natural Park of S’Albufera des Grau.
