Estremoz

Estremoz is a Portuguese municipality in the Évora district, in the Alentejo region. It is one of the so-called White Villages and is surrounded by fields and vineyards. It has as well as olive and wine industries, an agricultural market, a renowned ceramics and marble quarries. Not surprisingly, it has been known since ancient times as the Portuguese “marble city”.
The old city, coinciding with the upper part of the town, is walled; among its monuments, its castle from the 13th century and numerous Gothic and Manueline style houses stand out. The lower part, known as Vila Nova, has its epicenter in Rossio Square, and also has various places of cultural and tourist interest such as Lago do Gadanha, an artificial lake built entirely in marble at the end of the 17th century, or the Convent of the Congregates.
