Located in the west-central area of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Santiago has a population of 49,082 inhabitants and a density of 20 inhab./km2 (2010 data) in a surface area of 2,413 km².
Due to its literary tradition, and its many artists from the city and from other parts, and the wealth of their production, the city of Santiago is known as the “Land of Poets”.
