San Cristóbal de La Laguna

San Cristóbal de la Laguna, popularly known as La Laguna, is a city of 155.855 inhabitants of the North-East of the Canary Island of Tenerife (Spain). The city forms with Santa Cruz and some small villages the metropolitan zone of Tenerife. The city hosts the Public University of the island, the University of La Laguna where more than 23.000 people study. The city has been declared World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999 as a unique example of colonial city without ramparts. The economic activity differs depending on the zone of the city. Thus at the center and the south of the city the economic activity is mainly commercial and industrial whereas at the north the economy is associated to tourism. A Part of the municipality is part of the Natural Park of Anaga.
