Charter of Educating Cities<\/h1>

The roadmap for the member cities of the International Association of Educating Cities<\/h2><\/div>

Through its preamble and principles, the Charter of Educating Cities provides guidance to local authorities on how to develop public policies and initiatives that integrate formal, non-formal and informal education into urban life, promoting education as a lifelong and far-reaching process. It is a framework that defines the values and commitments that should guide local governments in making the city a space that educates in all areas of life. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Education extends beyond the school walls to permeate the whole city.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

(\u2026) local authorities in every country must act, at the local level, as platforms for experimenting with and consolidating full democratic citizenship.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

We must affirm the right to an educational city as an extension of the right to education.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Now more than ever, there is an urgent need for education in values and human rights, which give meaning, provide inspiration and chart a democratic course.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

To learn and develop a sense of community and the skills needed to organise communal life on the basis of equality and justice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Educating cities see themselves as champions of the ideal of inclusion, welcoming everyone just as they are and inviting them to take part in a shared urban project.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The Charter of Educating Cities in pictures<\/h2>

The Charter of Educating Cities was drawn up by municipal representatives during the First International Congress of Educating Cities, held in Barcelona in 1990, based on the belief that personal development cannot be left to chance and that the urban environment plays a fundamental role as an educational agent.<\/p>\n

The Charter was revised at the Third International Congress (Bologna, 1994), the Eighth Congress (Genoa, 2004) and in 2020 to adapt its approaches to new social challenges and needs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
